Don't Give Up — Every Problem Has a Fix!
Even the most experienced lash wearers had a rocky start. If your first (or fifth!) attempt didn't go quite to plan, you're in the right place. This guide covers the most common DIY lash problems and, more importantly, exactly how to solve them.
Problem 1: My Lashes Keep Falling Off
This is the most common complaint from beginners, and it almost always comes down to one of three things:
Cause A: Oily skin or lashes
Fix: Oil is the number one enemy of lash adhesive. Before applying, cleanse your lashes thoroughly to remove any oil, makeup residue, or moisturiser. Even natural skin oils can break down adhesive over time. Check out our lash cleaning guide for tips on proper prep.
Cause B: The glue wasn't tacky enough before placement
Fix: If you're using a separate adhesive, you must wait 20-30 seconds after applying it to the band before placing the lash. Wet glue doesn't grip — it needs to become slightly tacky first. This is the single most common beginner mistake.
Cause C: Not pressing firmly enough
Fix: After placing the lash, hold it firmly against your lash line for at least 15–20 seconds. Don't just touch it — press it.
Problem 2: My Lashes Look Uneven or Crooked
Cause: Placement angle
Fix: The most common reason for crooked lashes is looking straight ahead in the mirror during application. Instead, look downward into a mirror placed below eye level. This gives you a much clearer view of your lash line and makes precise placement far easier.
Problem 3: There's a Gap Between the Lash and My Lash Line
Fix: This usually means the lash wasn't placed close enough to the root of your natural lashes. Try again, placing the band as close to your lash line as possible — almost touching the skin. If you can see a gap, a thin line of eyeliner along the lash band will conceal it instantly while you're still perfecting your technique.
Problem 4: The Inner or Outer Corner Keeps Lifting
Fix: The corners are the trickiest part to secure. A few tips:
- Apply a tiny extra dot of adhesive to the corners specifically before placing
- After placing the lash, use the tip of a clean cotton bud or your fingernail to press the corners down firmly
- Hold each corner for an extra 10 seconds
- Avoid getting water or steam near your lashes for the first hour after application
- A slight overlap of the segments helps to stop lifting occurring
Problem 5: I Can't Get the Lash Off Without It Hurting
Fix: Never pull a lash off dry — this is how you damage your natural lashes. Always dissolve the adhesive first:
- Soak a cotton pad in oil-based makeup remover or micellar water or use our remover
- Hold it gently against your closed eye for 20–30 seconds
- Gently slide the lash ribbon from the outer corner inward — it should come away easily
If it's still resistant, soak for longer. Patience here protects your natural lashes.
Problem 6: My Lashes Look Too Dramatic / Not Dramatic Enough
Fix: This is a product selection issue rather than an application one. If your lashes look too intense, try a half lash applied to the outer corner only — it gives a lifted, natural effect. If you want more drama, try a fuller lash style or a longer length. Our 12mm vs 14mm guide can help you find the right length for your look.
Problem 7: My Lashes Are Losing Their Shape
Fix: Lash ribbons can lose their curl if they're not stored properly. After removing, clean off any adhesive residue and store them back in their original tray or a lash case. Avoid squashing them under other products. Proper storage means you can reuse them many more times.
